“Plotting the Future of Cultural Journalism” — a panel brought together by The Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance — was held last week at WHYY.

We attended this and now we can’t stop talking about it.

Some of our favorite gems from the keynote:

Do what you do best and link to the rest.
Walk the perimeter of your community and report on what’s new, important and interesting.
Have a mission statement that inspires people.
Don’t duplicate what’s already being done well.
“70% of content on the web was created by users this year.
Create structures connecting people at the center of the community.
Unlock the potential in people.
MOOCs! Totally news to us and now we might just attend a lecture at Stanford University for fun.

In a prison greenhouse in Philadelphia, inmates start vegetable seedlings that give back to the community through the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s City Harvest Program.

The Sustainability Workshop proves that high school seniors are never too young to learn about environmental friendliness.

The program, which is based at the eco-friendly Navy Yard, has taught a select group of South Philly high school seniors the virtues of living and acting sustainably.

However, the Workshop is set to morph into a full high school as soon as the 2013-14 school year with a $175,000 incubation grant. While much still has to be decided, the Workshop’s educators are looking forward to being able to reach a much wider net of students.

Project H.O.M.E. has transformed a former hair salon at Suburban Station into the “Hub of Hope” — a drop-in center for homeless men and women who have resisted moving off the streets in the past.

“We know that with this population, it is important to meet them where they are—both physically and emotionally—to build the trust and support they need to come in from the cold,” says Sister Mary Scullion, co-founder of Project H.O.M.E.”
